Statement to the media:

Make-A-Wish® Eastern North Carolina Finds Ways to Bring Hope and Joy during Uncertain Times
New social media campaign encourages Make-A-Wish kids amidst wish delays due to COVID-19

RALEIGH, NC – Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina faces a record number of wishes waiting to be granted as a result of the recent need to postpone all wishes that involve travel due to the public and medical concerns of COVID-19. As 77% of wishes involve travel, 970 wishes nationwide and over 40 wishes through Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina were immediately impacted with additional wishes being impacted every day. The challenging circumstances have inspired Make-A-Wish to think creatively about how to bring hope and joy to Make-A-Wish kids during unpredictable and scary times.
Friday, March 20, 2020, Make-A-Wish announced “Messages of Hope” to give supporters and the general public alike a fun, easy way to help children with critical illnesses without needing to leave the house.

Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina knows that the anticipation of a wish-come-true can be a powerful motivator for wish kids to face and overcome the challenges in their way. Through “Messages of Hope,” Make-A-Wish invites the public to spread hope and anticipation by writing, recording or photographing themselves delivering messages of encouragement for wish kids waiting for wishes impacted by COVID-19. In addition to sharing messages, please consider a donation at to prepare Make-A-Wish to grant the unprecedented number of pending wishes once normal operations resume. The last step is to post the messages to any social media channel along with the tag Facebook: @eastncwish; Instagram/Twitter: @makeawisheastnc, and the hashtag, #WishesAreWaiting. Two or more friends should also be tagged and challenged because the more messages shared, the greater the impact on wish kids and their families.

The announcement of “Messages of Hope” on Friday March 20, 2020, comes exactly 40 days prior to April 29, 2020, known as World Wish Day. On World Wish Day, Make-A-Wish will mark the 40th anniversary of the wish that inspired the founding of the organization with noteworthy surprises and announcements. Until then, Make-A-Wish will spend the next 40 days highlighting some of the messages received on the official Make-A-Wish social media accounts. The messages will give wish kids and their families hope today so that they can look forward to tomorrow.

“‘Messages of Hope’ calls upon people looking to do something positive and impactful during these uncertain times to bring hope and joy to children and families who need it most,” said Richard K. Davis, Make-A-Wish America president and CEO. “As we approach the 40th anniversary of the founding wish, there’s no denying that we are in the midst of one of the most challenging times in Make-A-Wish history. The time is now for the public to rally in support of wishes because every child deserves a childhood.”

Through “Messages of Hope,” Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina aims to build support for the wishes currently on hold due to COVID-19 because wishes can improve a child’s quality of life and produce better health outcomes. More than ever before, wishes need the support of individual and corporate donors to grant the wish of every eligible child.

About Make-A-Wish
Make-A-Wish® Eastern North Carolina creates life-changing wishes for children with critical illness. We seek to bring every eligible child's wish to life because every child deserves a childhood. Research shows children who have wishes granted can build the physical and emotional strength they need to fight their illness.  We serve all medically eligible children who reside in the 49 counties east of the Orange / Alamance county line. Our chapter operates solely through generous donations of individuals, corporations and foundations. With the help of more than 350 volunteers, including our Board of Directors, Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina has granted more than 3,800 wishes since its inception. Statement to the media:

RALEIGH, NC – The health and safety of all Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina constituents, including our wish families and partners, is our priority. At this time, due to current medical and public concerns Make-A-Wish America has made the difficult decision to postpone all wish travel, as well as wish kid participation in all activities and events related to Make-A-Wish that involve large gatherings (e.g. large scale wish granting events, theme parks, etc.) until further notice. On average, 77 percent of wishes involve air travel. Currently, Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina has postponed 40 of the 210 wishes planned for this year in our chapter area. Nationwide, 970 wishes were immediately impacted with 30 more wishes estimated to be postponed each day.

As a result, we have adapted our organization messaging to address the current situation and will be launching a new national campaign, PSA and press release on Friday that calls attention to the children waiting for their wishes to come true.

We will continue to monitor guidance from national and international public health and government organizations, including the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO) and U.S. State Department, and are working closely with the national Make-A-Wish Medical Advisory Council, keeping the best interest of the children and families we serve at the center of all policy decisions we make.

As always, we remain committed to our vision of granting the wish of every eligible child fighting a critical illness. The world needs hope right now, and our mission is to create life-changing wishes that deliver hope to children with critical illnesses. Our mission has been interrupted and we need your support now more than ever.

We will continue to share the hope, the joy, and the power a wish can have for a child battling a critical illness on our external channels. Your help today will bring hope and joy to wish kids in the eastern North Carolina community tomorrow. To support wishes across eastern North Carolina, visit our website at

In the face of the local coronavirus threat, Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina is prepared and positioned to respond.

While we have a national reach as an organization, we are uniquely positioned locally and prepared to do what we do best: work towards community transformation through the granting of wishes to medically eligible children.

As members of the local community from the Triangle to the coast, we stand alongside all of you ready to do all we can to prevent the spread of the virus and to help our neighbors in crisis.

How is Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina responding?

In times like this, our most important calling is to the safety of our wish children and everyone in our wish community – families, community supporters, volunteers and staff. Due to current medical and public concerns, Make-A-Wish America has made the difficult decision to postpone all wish travel until further notice, as well as wish kid participation in all activities and events related to Make-A-Wish that involve large gatherings. We will continue to monitor guidance from national and international public health and government organizations, including the CDC, WHO and local government entities. The best interest of the children and families we serve will be at the center of every policy decision we make.

The safety of our staff and volunteers is of critical importance to us. To that end, we have been planning for this eventuality for nearly a month. We have tested our ability to work remotely as a staff and are now prepared to continue the work of serving our mission in a remote environment. This will allow our staff and volunteers to continue to work in the safest environment possible, while also being part of the solution in our communities.
What comes next?

Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina remains committed to granting the wish of every eligible child. Those wishes that are postponed right now will be granted. That is our pledge to our wish children, their families and to all of you. We cannot know exactly when this will pass, but when it does, our wish community will be ready.
How Can You Help?

In difficult and uncertain times, we so often see the best of our human nature. Rather than disengaging and retreating, we reach out to each other and work together for a better tomorrow. We challenge you to join us in this time of need.

Join us

Join us in keeping those children in our community that are waiting for wishes close in your thoughts.

Joins us in preparing the way for all the wishes that will be granted as soon as we are on the other side of this. Your gift now will allow us to grant every postponed wish as rapidly as possible.
